Fishing report 11-6
Fall Chinook fishing is still going to be a great choice in Tillamook and Nehalem Bays. Last week folks were still able to find some beautiful Chinook in the bays. Trolling 360 flashers with small 3.5 size spinners has been one of the most productive techniques lately. Of course, anglers are still trolling triangle flashers with cut plug Herring, and that technique will always work well. But 360 flashers have taken the cake lately.
Tributary coastal Fall Chinook fishing is another good choice. With rain in the forecast, look for rivers to rise and fish to start entering them. Backtrolling Kwikfish or Mag Lips is one of the most popular techniques that has been used for as long as drift boats have been around. Backbouncing eggs and shrimp is another very popular technique. There is something about a cluster of eggs bounced down through a promising run that Chinook just can’t resist.
Tributary Coho fishing will continue to be good through December. We have two runs of Coho, the “A” run which is an early run that has now started to tail off, and a “B” run that has just started to enter into rivers. The B run fish are typically bigger and, since rivers have started to cool down, they tend to be much better biters. Spinners, spoons, plugs, twitching jigs and eggs are all great bait choices. Make sure you bring several choices with you as you never know what the fish will want that day. Be sure to check regulations for the water you intend to fish.
Bottom fishing has been good and when the ocean has let anglers across the bar, limits have been coming in fairly fast. Curly tail grubs, vertical jigs, shrimp flies and P-Line Rock Cod Rigs have all been working well.
Catch and Release Sturgeon fishing remains a steady option and makes for a great day on the water. This fishery can be tons of fun and provides a good opportunity to get young or novice anglers on the water. Squid, sand shrimp, herring and smelt have all been working well.
Fall Trout fishing can be extremely productive and ODFW typically stocks lakes throughout the Northwest with legal and trophy Trout. Spinners and Kastmasters are great lures to use this time of year as they imitate bait fish and these Trout are trying to build up their fat reserves to last through the winter. Nightcrawlers, Powerbait and Salmon eggs are all great bait options, while trolling small Mag Lips or Flatfish can be extremely effective as well.
Crabbing has continued to be awesome with folks reporting large keepers and boat limits being common!
