Fishing Report 8-26-2022

Fishing Report:
Fishing at Buoy 10 and in the Astoria area has been really good as of late. Even though it has been a hatchery retention only fishery, the limits have been common and some nice size Coho are starting to show up as well. Folks have been finding success trolling with both 360 and triangle shaped flashers. Herring has been one of the top producing baits as well as anchovies. It appears there have been more herring than any other bait fish in the ocean, so matching the hatch and choosing to troll plug-cut herring has been a good option. Small spinners, Brad’s Superbaits, Spinfish, and larger size spinners have all been producing as well.
The ocean has since been closed off at the mouth of the Columbia River. However, the fishing was absolutely on fire prior to the closure which bodes well for the next few weeks of fishing in the Columbia.
Bottom fishing has been really good lately with many Captains finding success on a wide variety of bottom fish species, as well as some really nice Lingcod. Tuna are also being consistently caught off the coast. Many folks report lots of Tuna being seen around the 30-40 mile mark. Fisherman’s Pro, Ted Teufel, has been finding success every trip out with fish being caught in multiple techniques. Look for this fishery to stay good for quite a while.
In the Columbia, upstream from Tongue point, the Chinook fishing has really started to take off. Folks are finding success anchor fishing with wobblers or spinners during the outgoing tides. Once the tide switches and starts to slack out and starts to come in, many people are now deploying 360 flashers with small spinners, Superbaits, and Spinfish. This fishery should catch fire any day now and make for many happy anglers with limits of Chinook.
All of this warm weather has pushed many folks to head for lakes to cool off and spend some time outdoors. This is a great time to bring a long a few rods and spend some time chasing some Trout. Recently, North Fork Reservoir just received over 11,000 Trout. That’s right, not a miss print, 11,000 Trout! These snappy hatchery Trout are easily caught fishing bait under a bobber or off of the bottom as well as on spinners, Kastmasters, and bubble and fly.
Kokanee fishing at Lake Merwin, Yale and Swift reservoir has been quite good. The fish are still down around the 45-55’ foot mark in the water column. The reports are that they are fairly schooled up so once you find the fish, you should have plenty of chances at getting a nice limit of Kokanee.
Crabbing has been good and will only continue to get better over the next few weeks. This is one outdoor activity that can involve everyone in the family as there are plenty of different jobs for each person. From baiting pots, pulling pots, checking crab and watching out for other boaters, there is something for everyone to stay active.
